The Federal Government, the largest user of real estate in the nation, occupies 295.4 million square meters of office and related space. Currently, 31.96 million square meters of that space is leased. According to the General Services Administration (GSA), property manager for the Federal Government, the amount of government- leased space continues to grow at a more rapid pace than that of owned space. During the five-year time span of 1997-2004, the Federal Government increased its occupancy of leased office space by 6.3 million square meters representing a 24% growth rate as compared with a negative 3.25% growth in occupancy of government owned space.

US Federal Government Lease Spending

The Federal Government spends about $6.2 billion in annual rental cost for leased property within the United States. All properties leased to United States federal government agencies are backed by the full faith and credit of the U. S. Government.

General Services Administration spends over $4.3 billion each year on rent (71% of total rental costs).

Other major leasing agencies include the United States Postal Service, the Department of Agriculture and the Army. There are 22 other leasing agencies that account for about 11% of the remaining rental costs.

The General Services Administration represents many US Government agencies including, for example, the Social Security Administration, Bureau of Land Management, Drug Enforcement Agency, US Department of Agriculture, Department of Homeland Security, Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigration and the Environmental Protection Agency.
